    Hi,

I have seen alot of people talking about twitter on many forums. I guess my question is how do i use twitter to gain more contacts and networking?

I have been on twitter and it seems twitter may just be hype, or maybe i maybe i am just doing it wrongly.

I would really love to hear different views on this

    Hi,

I actually did not know that :)

Other that what about the main question, is it effective or a hype?

Personally I think it is all hype this year, but then, they did have a huge marketing budget.

If you think about Twitter and other social media in terms of what you can get out of it instead of what you can put into it you may struggle to see any benefit.

Many social media channels work if you use them to add value to your overall web offering.

A Tweet is a mini blog post. A sound bite, something useful. Be subtle ;)

    All just my humble opinion.

Twitter's usefulness is still emerging, but I must say I'm finding it very useful. I'd suggest checking out one of the supporting applications like 'wefollow' (the forum won't let me give the website) as it lists popular Twitterers by category (like business, celeb, etc) and you could browse through what people actually write about, and how they use the tool. I hope it doesn't break forum rules, but you could look at my profile too for an idea - I'm @bronwyndurand - it takes some work, but its actually quite fulfilling finding enlightened or interesting people. I've been totally overstimulated some days by the sheer volume of excellent information I've been getting from the people I follow. I've even blogged about what I've observed people and organisations using Twitter for as a marketing tool. Try simply listening to Twitter until you understand how it works and how it may work for you.

Tried it, increased traffic but lowered conversions :(

    Hi LOS design UK
Its great that Twitter increased your traffic - conversions dropping would relate to just that you aren't converting the new traffic (new medium, slightly different visitor) - perhaps your tweets were attracting people who were interested, just not buying. That in of itself isn't a bad thing - the followers you have attracted could be operating in your industry (looking for potential future contacts or suppliers) rather than your usual end customer. The lead time to conversion will likely be different, as it always is in different media. You may have to do other kinds of extra steps in the buying process - maybe a different type of something offered free, as an example, to appeal to a different audience. You need to find the right type of thing to Tweet to attract visitors that will convert, without overtly selling yourself.
Its new territory, and experimenting is how you will find if it can work for you. I'd use your line - and say that if a website needs to make an impression in 2 seconds conventionally, then for a Twitterer, or social media follower, then you may have less time, because what they mostly do is consume internet.

Thanks, I am aware of the principles, after extensive usage I have decided it is not the right area for me to place more effort.

It is a great resource if your product/service fits.

Twitter is not for everyone, in fact, it isn't for most businesses when you consider the entire SIC range.

I am still experimenting with Twitter, and have not yet reached any conclusions. I'm still finding it difficult to sort of manage the contacts I have. Although some would say the random nature of contacts is actually what makes it useful.

As yet I have to fully exploit Twitter, but have spent a lot of time looking at how it could be applied to my business.

The main advice I would offer it to spend some time, perhaps an hour a week, searching for businesses that are of intrest to you, or individuals, and follow them.

Usually they in turn will follow you.

If you are both using it as a means to relay information, lets say what the business is up to on a day to day basis, then those who have an intrest will keep a watch.

If you are in a business that is able to offer advice, or industry knowledge, then use it as a means to share the information that others may find intresting.

Then, lets say, you have an offer, a sale, a new product, you have an audience to promote to.

Twitter is undergoing some changes, they have just relaunched their home screen to make it more relevant to a wider audience, and they are spending a lot of time looking into how the application may be usefull, to businesses, as this is where their revenue will come from in the future.

For now I would look at it as a way to gather contacts, remember it has a private communication facility as well, making it easy to contact those who follow you directly...

The use of Twitter shouldn't be about pushing your product or service upon people.

Twitter is a communications method and the most value can be derived from building up a network of likeminded people and listening

In my niche there are some people who are at the top of their game, openly discussing theories, processes and sharing the results of their studies, saving others time and effort and also £ in avoiding making the same mistakes as they did.

Open communication is key and you need to engage with your audience.
Sales people get shunned pretty quickly.

If you are seeking feedback about your product or an issue surrounding your industry then using twtpoll is a good option (as seen here). This allows you to gather opinion from a wide range of people.

Twitter spans the world and bridges the gap between technologies. Some people use it on the iPhone, some from their PC or MAC and some purely by email.

You get out of Twitter what you put in.
So far I have found clients and suppliers on Twitter that i could not have reached by more traditional means.

You'll find me on Twitter @getnoticed

Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, known as "tweets". It was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched that July. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 300 million users as of 2011,Generating over 300 million tweets and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day.It has been described as "the SMS of the

Do like this comment. We do find that some elements of twitter can be bit hyped up. It really depends what you want to try and acheive. Would suggest that you follow the companies and businesses that you actually share the same interest in so there is some sort of relevance of you actually using it. Interacting and engaging with people on twitter as much as you can is also good. It also can be a good resource tool for getting information though you shouldn't take everything on twitter as Gospel.
  18. Not sure if it is the best but depends on each individuals opinion/experience/view. In our case we do think it is one of the better social networking sites, pretty straight forward to use and allows you to engage quite easily with other individuals.
