What is reverse SEO and how does it work?
  2. Barry New Member

Its basically a technique used to get not only bolster your position in a search engines index, but also to push unwanted results out.

For example you own a site called bluewidgets.com - and you've had a bad write-up on a review website. The review site is now showing in google for the keywords 'bluewidgets review' - you dont want this review to be made noticable to the public so you need to create listings in the serps for the keywords 'bluewidgets review' in order to push theri page down the listings.

You could create a mini site aiming at the keywords 'bluewidgets review, you could write your own review of you site on another review site and make links to it. You could even try writing and submitting a review on the first review site claiming you actually had a good experience. You could write a review section on your own site and link to it. etc etc

Some people claim you can damage a competitors site by linking to it from dodgy sites and paid links - but this is not normally the case.

Reverse seo is a method of diluting the serps with your own results on keyword phrases, its basically the same as seo in a sence.

I think of reverse SEO like reverse engineering - take something apart to see how it works. So you look through a competitors backlinks and onsite info (keywords, keyword density etc) to build up an idea of what its gonna take to out rank them.

    Unfortunately Jay that's incorrect.

I remember the days when this was easy and the more connected the world becomes the more effort that needs to be taken.

We have just finished some work for a local Indian Restuarant that has has some really awful comments made about it, some indeed were also true, the news for them was that 'cached' data hangs around like a very bad smell for sometime. A little focus on Customer Service would have made their situation better. The new phrase should be - if we have been great please tell Google, if not please, please tell us.

Thats an excellent phrase, if only you could ask so blatantly. The trouble is most people write bad reviews on the net because they want everyone to know.

Its so true about bad reviews, they are always horrible to read and impossible to erase. We have just moved into a new business and are having a major upgrade in terms of services and facilities offered, items lacked by the previous owner hence they went on to have complaints about them. I def plan when we have fully upgraded go on to correct some of the reviews the business has.

Fair do's though its simple to get these reviews pushed down the rankings or diluted in amongst positive reviews especially with the UK having dynamic I/P on most connections, you dont even have to goto a cyber cafe, library, phone etc etc to write and submit stuff, you just reboot your router.

Of course like true positive seo though you have to take things steady and act as natural as possible. A positive review here, one there, write an article submit it too distribution websites, search for another review site and write another positive review etc etc

Never think you can get away with submitting 10 positive reviews on a site in a week - when only 8 have been made in 4 years ;)

And also you need to live upto those standards in real life for it to really work!!

OK, I agree with Jay - in my view the review stuff should be called Negative SEO.... Reversed SEO is in principle the same as reversed engineering e.g. start from the end and work it back to the beginning. This is used for example to work out what SEO techniques a competitor has used to achieve their rankings. Or if something goes wrong with your own SEO, to reverse what you did to put it right again...

OMG... i think this is what happened to us. We came on those sites that featured bad reviews and asked them to contact us (it was more of a service issue!) but then nobody came forward. We took to surverying our client list and nobody had a bad thing to say about our services!

    lol, surely not....

SEO does get dirty at times :D

Interesting:) but I think any bad reviews could be turned into a good reviews? Just comment on it and make sure you commented on it in a professional way... Good response to a comment could give your business a better boost.

Reverse SEO is simply about optimizing websites to downgrade any website ranking in Google/Search Engine for one or more keyword terms.Reverse SEO can be used to suppress negative publicity that targets your company in Google, Yahoo, and Bing. By pushing bad press onto the second, third, and fourth pages of Google, those pages will be prevented from gaining traction or attention.

Reverse seo can be traced if your competitor has the knowledge. Any evidence of reverse seo, can lead you to get sued! It's better to make your page better that try to derank your competitor. Also other competitors will get above you, what will you do? Derank them too?

I find the whole review system to be a bit of a farce due to the amount it is abused. I know of a competitor who frequently writes his own reviews, I can spot them a mile off as he makes the same spelling mistakes again and again plus all his customers are repeat customers. Now in my business very few customers need your services often. I had one bad google review where the customer blatantly lied but I have no way of removing it. My response isn't shown and as its my only review it doesn't look good.

You can turn off Google reviews in Your Google Places settings.

Reverse SEO is the technique it will helps to increase own site's ranking and decrease the competitor's ranking. That means it can be used to remove from the primary result page, navigation publicity that target your company in search engine.

    Hi Barry,

Thanks for your clarification, I too have heard this term many times but didn't know the exact meaning. But now I know about it. :)

It is the act of rendering a search engine's results optimal by decreasing the rank of potentially negative results from Internet. Decreasing the negative results and postings from world wide web will less the impact on your website and thus authority of your site will increase.
