The trouble is with an increasing number of these forums is that they start off as 'dofollow' but eventually end up being 'nofollow'. linking I agree, ive seen lots of forums change from follow to nofollow, but I dont think its a waste of time, people link to your site freel when you build up a significant following, but you have to get there somehow first hey!
They will go nofollow if people abuse them or Google may decide to discount all forum links who knows...
