I would also make sure that your story is newsworthy, even if it's only aimed at a nice market. We try to do research into our market and send out press releases with interesting stats.

I'd like to add that the company should never use WE, I or US anywhere in the release unless it's a quote or something.

    This is great advice :)

    I love writing them too.

An eye catching headline is all important as you have just 2 seconds to attract the attention of busy readers.

I recently wrote a press release for a restaurant that is having a themed evening in support of a local charity.

    The headline is

    'Bollywood Fever Hits Dunstable'

The story is about the Bollywood dance & music craze sweeping the nation. Wrapped up neatly in that story are details of the fundraising event, the who, what, why, where and when etc.

If you want to write your own press releases there might be a few samples online in your genre that you can use as an idea of how they are laid out.

    Good luck

This is mentioned in the first post, but not to enough detail: The who, what, where, when are incredibly important, and must be in your first paragraph, but much more than that is the why. The why is what makes your press release news-worthy. Read through your press release and ask yourself why (without being facetious) and it will get a lot better with little work.

A great place to submit your own press releases is prlog.com.

They distribute them around the web and it's indexed by google news. Don't forget your keywords! Some people subscribe to google alerts so any time a news article is released that contains the keywords you specify google notifies you, or them. This can be a good way to generate a reasonable amount of good quality clicks.

Great guide. Cheers. I would also say it is worth being mindful of sending too many releases to the same sources, particularly if they are not directly relevant.

Press releases can be incredibly useful for getting exposure, as long as you can get them sent out via the ether. Why do I say this? Quite simply because today's journalists don't have the time to read them and use 'keyword sniffers' to view the releases on various sites on the web. SO make sure you include lots of keywords in the text and you could be on the BBC (it worked for a client of mine!)
