I started my first business in late 2002 with the help of the Princes Trust. I quickly realised that all of the accounting software that was available at the time was pretty awful. It was clunky, full of jargon and columns of grey numbers. It was designed for accountant and by accountants.
As a web developer (someone who writes computer programs for the internet), I had the skills to put something basic together that suited my needs. At the time I was sharing an office with a number of other business that had just started. As the resident computer geek, I'd often get asked what I was using for creating, sending and tracking invoices. Everyone else had the same problems I'd had and were either using spreadsheets or a manual system.
I got a few people set up on my system and got feedback on how to improve it for them. The important thing was that they were all business owners with no accounting knowledge and not particularly great IT skills.
I named the product KashFlow (it was very nearly called Lollymate or Spondulix until someone subtly suggested the names were perhaps not great) and started marketing it to members of the Federation of Small Businesses and the Princes Trust.
I kept up the cycle of asking for feedback and improving the software (and we still do this now), with the emphasis being on ease of use.
Over the past few years we've grown very quickly and are now the market leaders for web-based accounting software in the UK. There are now 16 of us. We're chaired by Lord Young (former Cable & Wireless chairman). We were the first ever accounting software to be certified by PayPal for our integration with them. We were chosen by two of the biggest franchises of Accountants, Tax Assist and Abacus to provide their software. Plus lots of other exciting stuff.
The most satisfying achievement for me is that we regularly beat established accounting software companies at software awards.
Now I have a great team working with me to continue to build KashFlow, I get to spend time writing my blog.
So there's the short version of the KashFlow story. If you don't already use the software, click the button below to get started.
